This project features a series of sound and retaining walls along the Interstate 5 corridor. The walls mark the southern edge of the City of Tacoma near South 38th Street. The imagery is derived from Tacoma's waterfront and its forests that were largely harvested to provide post WWII housing. Rope imagery representing Tacoma's waterfront port combined with residential molding updates the corridor-wide random board patterning and captures WWII housing references. The residential molding provides variety and counterpoint to the standard random board. The pattern units recombine to create roadway scaled designs, suggesting residential pattern motifs and NW Mountains. The work varies in height, ranging from 8' to more than 45' into the air. The project includes over 100,000 sq.ft. of patterned sound and retaining walls marking the south entry to Tacoma.
